WITH WOMEN WE RUN - OUR AR COMMITMENT
Earlier in 2022, we launched WITH WOMEN WE RUN — a powerful initiative that has become a permanent pillar in our adidas Runners community values. Through this, our collective goal is to help end harassment and any forms of violence against women to make running safer for all.
To kickstart the initiative, we began by looking at what gender inequality is and how it impacts running culture. At this point, we also drew attention to the root cause of gender-based violence — a wider culture that accepts, perpetuates and promotes a view of women and vulnerable groups as unequal. Action and allyship were the key focus in the second phase of WITH WOMEN WE RUN. Here, we asked ourselves a vital question: “How we can be an ally to female and non-binary runners in our community?”
As the initiative enters its third phase, we have created a manifesto to drive home the firm stance that we as a community take on gender-based inequality and violence. Within this, we address the unsafety of runners across the globe as a result of the discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence that they face each and every day.
The manifesto also highlights the extreme prevalence of this issue among the most vulnerable in our society. This is a reality that has become a social norm, and one that we refuse to accept. Our core mission is clear — to put an end to gender-based violence in all its forms and work towards creating a safe, supportive space for a global community.
To ensure that these ideas and values remain in the forefront of every adidas Runners’ mind, captains and coaches will read out a version of the manifesto before every community run, regardless of the location, which will in turn be repeated by participating runners. In addition, members will see a similar pledge in the adidas Runners app when signing up for monthly challenges.
The AR manifesto has been carefully crafted using invaluable feedback from coaches and captains across our global community. These community voices form an integral part of adidas Runners. Collaborating closely with our communities is crucial to ensuring that adidas Runners is a diverse and inclusive space, where members feel seen, heard and respected.
As an extension to our manifesto, we have also defined a code of conduct. With this, we want to ensure that our members are committed to supporting our mission and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow runners.
From now on, all existing and new adidas Runners will be required to sign the code of conduct in order to be part of the community. In doing so, members make a binding promise — they commit to reflecting on their own behavior, supporting those who may feel unsafe, and being an ally in preventing all forms of harassment, discrimination and gender-based violence.
And why not join us and run 8 km as part of our WITH WOMEN WE RUN challenge? Head to the adidas Running app to sign up for free.
We believe that as runners, and through the power of allyship, we are well-placed to transform running culture and in doing so create a more gender-just world. Now and always.
